Nifty Plus

Nifty Plus is a subscription to online features that Nifty runs for you. This page explains how to connect it, forward emails to Nifty, send things from other apps, move it and cancel it.

On this page

Nifty Plus is a subscription to online features that Nifty runs for you. To find out what it includes and what it costs, see thenifty.app/plus.

Nifty Plus is separate from your licence. It doesn't change your licence's Updates until date, and it works during Nifty's free trial too.

What Nifty Plus includes

  • Unsplash photos: Search Unsplash for a project's cover. See Projects.
  • Email forwarding: Forward emails from your mail app to Nifty. See Forward emails to Nifty.
  • Send to Nifty API: Let other apps and services send tasks, notes, events, documents and emails to Nifty. See Send things from other apps.
  • Remote (beta): Reach your Nifty from your phone or another device wherever you are, with an app that works with Remote. See Remote.

Connect Nifty Plus

  1. Open Settings → Nifty Plus and choose Get a code. Your Nifty account opens in your browser.
  2. Type your email address. Nifty sends you a sign-in link, and you don't need a password.
  3. Open the link from the email. If you don't have a subscription yet, choose monthly or yearly and pay.
  4. Choose Get a code, and copy the code it shows.
  5. Back in Settings → Nifty Plus, paste the code and choose Connect.

Nifty connects straight away. A code works once, for 15 minutes. If it runs out, get a new one from your account page. You can also start on your account page at account.thenifty.app, before you open Nifty.

Note:

Only paste a code into your own copy of Nifty. Nobody from Nifty will ever ask you for one.

Settings → Nifty Plus then shows your account's email address, your plan, and when it renews. Under Included with Nifty Plus, it lists each feature with how it's doing. Choose one to open its page.

Forward emails to Nifty

With Nifty Plus, you have your own address for forwarding emails to Nifty. It starts with three words, such as maple-otter-lantern. Each email you forward is added to Unsorted in the Library, as if you'd dropped its .eml file in. See Add emails.

  1. Open Settings → Connections → Email forwarding. Your address is at the top.
  2. Copy the address, and forward emails to it from your mail app. You can also set up a rule in your mail app to forward some emails automatically.

Nifty collects forwarded emails every 2 minutes while it's running. To collect them straight away, choose Check now. When you view an email that was forwarded, its details say Forwarded to your Nifty address.

An email can be up to 20 MB, and up to 30 emails can wait to be collected. If Nifty can't accept an email, your mail server returns it to you with the reason.

Choose who can forward

Nifty accepts emails from anyone who has your address. To accept emails only from your own addresses, choose Change… beside Who can forward, choose Only these addresses, and list them. Nifty always refuses an email that fails its sender's checks (DMARC), because its sender may have been faked.

Get a new address

If your address starts getting emails you don't want, choose Get a new address…. The old address stops working straight away, and nobody else is ever given it. Update any forwarding rules in your mail app to use the new one. You can get up to 5 new addresses a day.

How forwarded emails are kept

Forwarded emails wait on Nifty Plus for up to 7 days, until your Nifty collects them. Each one is encrypted as soon as it arrives, with a key that only your copy of Nifty has, so nobody at Nifty can read it while it waits. Nifty Plus deletes an email once your Nifty has collected it, or after 7 days.

If you move Nifty Plus to another copy of Nifty, the new copy can't open emails that were waiting for the old one. Choose Check now in the old copy before you move. When your subscription ends, your address stops accepting emails, but Nifty still collects any that arrived before.

Send things from other apps

With the Send to Nifty API, your own scripts and services such as Zapier can send tasks, notes, events, documents and emails to Nifty. Make a token for each app in Settings → Connections → Send to Nifty API, and give it to the app. See Send to Nifty API for how apps use it.

Nifty collects what's sent every 2 minutes while it's running. To collect it straight away, choose Check now. Each item's details say it was sent to Nifty, and items wait, encrypted, as forwarded emails do.

Move Nifty Plus to a new computer

A subscription works on one copy of Nifty at a time. When you connect another copy, Nifty Plus moves to it and the old copy is disconnected.

Your first connection isn't a move. Every connection after it is, including connecting the same copy again after you disconnect it, or after restoring a backup. You can move Nifty Plus up to 3 times within 30 days of when you first subscribed. Your account page says when getting a code uses a move. After those 30 days, or after 3 moves, it asks you to contact support instead. Choose Contact support at the foot of any help page, and we'll allow the move.

Note:

If you copy Nifty's data folder to another computer and open both copies, the account service sees the same connection in two places. To keep your subscription safe, it disconnects both copies. Settings → Nifty Plus then says so, and you can connect the copy you want to keep with a new code. Connecting again after this isn't counted as a move, once every 30 days.

When Nifty is read-only

When Nifty is read-only, Remote keeps working while your subscription is paid. The other Nifty Plus features don't work, because they need to save changes. Your subscription is still charged, so the banner at the top of every page says so.

You can still connect, disconnect and manage billing while Nifty is read-only. To use Nifty Plus again, add a licence. If you'd rather stop paying, cancel the subscription.

Payments

  • Manage billing: In Settings → Nifty Plus, choose Manage billing to change your card or cancel. It opens Stripe's billing page.
  • A failed payment: If a payment doesn't go through, Nifty Plus keeps working while Stripe tries again. Update your card in Manage billing.
  • Cancelling: When you cancel, Nifty Plus keeps working until the end of the period you've paid for. Settings → Nifty Plus then shows when it ends.

Disconnect… in Settings → Nifty Plus disconnects this copy of Nifty, but it doesn't cancel your subscription. To stop paying, cancel it in Manage billing. Connecting again later counts as a move.

What your Nifty account stores

Your Nifty account is kept at account.thenifty.app. It stores:

  • Your email address, and Stripe's references for you and your subscription.
  • The name of the copy of Nifty that's connected, such as "Nifty on Ada's MacBook".
  • When that copy last checked your subscription.

Your notes, tasks, people, documents and other content never reach your Nifty account. Emails you forward to Nifty, and items other apps send through the Send to Nifty API, pass through Nifty Plus, encrypted, as How forwarded emails are kept explains. Nifty Plus keeps only a fingerprint of each Send to Nifty API token, with its name and last four characters, never the token itself. Traffic from Remote passes through Nifty Plus encrypted between your device and your Nifty, so Nifty Plus can't read it. Remote explains what Nifty Plus keeps for it, and for how long. Stripe handles your card details, and Nifty never sees them.

Unsplash searches

When you search Unsplash, Nifty sends your search words to Nifty's Unsplash service at unsplash.thenifty.app, which asks Unsplash. It doesn't keep a record of who searched. To keep Unsplash fair for everyone, each copy of Nifty can search 30 times a minute and 200 times an hour. Your browser shows the photos straight from Unsplash, so Unsplash sees your address when you search. When you choose a photo, Nifty tells Unsplash it was used, as Unsplash asks.
