New

  • Choose a date in a document's summary or key facts to see that day in your calendar or add an event on it, as you can with dates in notes.
  • To shorten a person's mention, press Backspace just after it. Each press removes a word, so @Maya Okafor becomes @Maya.
  • Remote, in beta with Nifty Plus, lets your devices reach Nifty wherever you are, without opening anything on your network. Pair a device in Settings → Nifty Remote by scanning a QR code or typing a code. Everything is encrypted between the device and your Nifty. A device you revoke can't reach Nifty at all. Nifty's phone app isn't available yet, so for now a device needs an app written for Remote.
  • With Nifty Plus, other apps and services such as Zapier can send tasks, notes, events, documents and emails to Nifty through the Send to Nifty API, even when your Nifty isn't reachable from the internet. Make a token for each app in Settings → Connections → Send to Nifty API. Each item goes in the list, project, folder or category its sender names, and its details say which app sent it. Apps can also send a document or email by its link, and Nifty Plus downloads it.
  • All files in the Library lists every document, wherever it is, with the folder each one is in.
  • Note insights reads each note once you stop editing it and picks out what's worth remembering: plans, promises, decisions, dates and news about the people and projects it mentions. A long note also gets a summary above it. Turn it on in Settings → AI features, then choose Insights in a note's ⋯ menu to see everything it found and where in the note it came from. To read a note Nifty hasn't read yet straight away, choose Generate insights in its ⋯ menu.
  • Notes have types: 1-to-1, Meeting, Journal, Thoughts, Idea and Reference. Choose one beside a note's category, or let Nifty fill it in from a linked calendar event's guests, including notes you've already linked. With Note titles on, AI chooses one too, so notes with your own titles are now sent as well. Choose a note's type when reading it to see every note of that type. Nifty now starts with only the Personal and Work categories.
  • Add a task from any app on a Mac. Press ⌃⌥N, and a New task window opens over what you're doing. You can change the shortcut in Nifty → Desktop Settings… → Quick entry.
  • You can type a date, such as "next Friday", "4 March" or "6 January 2000", instead of paging through the calendar. This works for a task's dates, a document's date, an event and a project. Nifty shows the day it has read before you press ↵.
  • Today has two new tabs, This week and Next week, which show what's coming. Each day shows how much of it your events take up and how many tasks are due, and you can choose a day to see everything on it. Your tasks are grouped into those due, those starting and those you're already working on, beside the week's project deadlines, key dates and meetings.
  • In the Mac app, press ⌃⌥⌘N in any app to bring Nifty to the front with a new note open. Change or turn off the shortcut in Nifty → Desktop Settings… → Shortcuts.
  • In the Mac app, press ⌃⌥⌘K in any app to bring Nifty to the front with search open. Change or turn off the shortcut in Nifty → Desktop Settings… → Shortcuts, which was called Quick entry.
  • Nifty now notices when you put a task off. Choose Delay to move a task to tomorrow, Monday or a week from today. If that's after its deadline, Nifty asks whether to keep the deadline or move it. A task you've put off shows a dot for each time, and an open task can show a timeline of its dates. Choose Start on a task, or press S, to mark the task you're working on now. A banner on every page shows it until you stop, and Settings → Tasks can stop it at set times each day. An open task now shows its home and dates beside the title, and Attach…, Set expiry… and Delegate… are in its ⋯ menu. Lists show each task's list or project before its title. A task can now start after its deadline. It shows Will be late and stays out of Today until it starts.
  • Give calendar events a type, such as Meeting, Appointment or Reminder. Its icon appears before the event’s title in Calendar, on Today, on a person’s Upcoming meetings tab and in a note’s Event section. To change it, open the event and choose the icon. Nifty tries to choose a type once when an event is added, from its title and guests and without AI. You can also choose one yourself or keep an event untyped. For a repeating event from a calendar you added, the type applies to every occurrence.
  • Redesigned today page
  • You can make your own rules for event types in Settings → Event type rules. For example, a rule can make every event whose name contains “standup” a Meeting. Your rules come before Nifty's own. When you save a rule, Nifty also applies it to matching events that don't have a type yet. Calendars and Event type rules have their own Calendar group in Settings.

Improved

  • The API is now stable: within /api/v1 it only gains endpoints, fields and values. To make its paths consistent, some have changed. You add a fact with POST /facts and list a person's facts with GET /facts?person_id=. You pin with PUT and unpin with DELETE. Actions are named with verbs, such as POST /notes/{id}/restore, and the duplicate PUT paths are gone. The reference marks the AI endpoints, document analysis and the Unsplash search as beta.
  • Nifty now collects forwarded emails every 2 minutes, rather than every 10.
  • Settings has a Nifty Plus page, which shows your subscription and links to each feature it includes. Email forwarding and Send to Nifty API are under Connections, and Nifty Remote has a page of its own. Without Nifty Plus, each feature's page explains what it does and how to get it.
  • Choosing Edit note puts the cursor where you were reading, and the note stays where it was on screen. If you were at the top of a long note, the cursor goes at the start. If you were at the bottom, or the note fits on the screen, it goes at the end.
  • A task you add from Today goes to your Inbox without a start date.
  • When you read a note, links to other websites open in a new browser tab, so the note stays open.
  • A note's PDF shows the people and projects it mentions by name alone, without @ or ^, and leaves out the note's mood.
  • N starts a new note in Notes, as it starts something new on every other page. Right-clicking a note in a list or a note card opens a menu to open, edit, pin or download it.
  • Some reorganization in Settings.
  • Today in Tasks now lists the same tasks as the Today page: those that have started, are due today or are overdue. The count beside Tasks at the top, and on its Today tab, counts them too.
  • Code generated from Nifty's API description now tells a search result's photo, colour and icon apart.
  • When a note's categories can't load, the category picker shows the same message and Try again as the rest of Nifty.
  • Note insights now reads every sentence of a note, including short ones that carry on from the one before, and picks out what needs to happen next. If a note @mentions someone or uses their full name, their first name elsewhere in the note means them. Insights also find tasks the note names by their title, and work out dates such as "next week" or "by Friday". Nifty keeps an insight with a date even when it can't tell who it's about. Notes Nifty has already read are read again the next time you edit them. To read them all now, choose Read … notes in the Note insights ⋯ menu in Settings → AI features.
  • Download PDF tells you while a long note's PDF is being made, and says why if it can't be made. A PDF holds up to 100 of the note's images.
  • This week and Next week are calmer. Events have a neutral background with their calendar's colour as a bar, and a day you open shows how long you have between events. A repeating meeting is now one quiet line with its days and time, and People shows up to 20 faces of the people you're meeting.
  • In the Mac app, the shortcut for adding a task from any app is now ⌃⌥⌘T, and pressing it while you're in Nifty opens New task there. If you already use the app, your shortcut stays as it was. You can change it in Nifty → Desktop Settings… → Shortcuts.
  • You can give a provider on a slow computer longer to answer. Edit the provider and choose up to an hour under Wait for an answer.
  • A model's ⋯ menu in Settings → Providers and models no longer has Try it…. To check a provider, edit it and choose Test connection.
  • A person’s Upcoming meetings tab now lists their meetings as Today does: one card with a label for each day, and each meeting’s time, its calendar’s colour as a bar and its title.
  • Today puts first what you need to do. A sentence sums up your day, and the card at the top shows the task you're working on, or suggests one to start, with Start (S) in place of Tomorrow (Z). Below it, To do today lists only what's overdue or due today. Everything else waits, folded, under Also open.
  • A task with a deadline but no start date is now on Today however far off its deadline is, under Also open, and on the Today tab in Tasks. For such a task, ⋯ offers Start today and Clear start date.
  • Various design improvements to the Today, This week and Next week pages.
  • Today's Schedule shows every event as one row, with its time, calendar and title. Choose an event to see its guests, place and Join. An event that's on now says "Now" and is shaded in its calendar's colour.
  • In Settings → Calendars, On Today is now On Today and the weeks ahead. When a calendar is set to Hidden, its events stay off Today, This week and Next week.
  • When a date such as a task's Deadline is selected, start typing to enter a date without opening the calendar first. Press Backspace to remove the date.
  • Nifty no longer writes a daily summary of each project, and Settings → AI features no longer has Project summaries. A project's Overview starts with About, and its card on Projects shows its description. Summaries already written are deleted. In the API, a project no longer has summary, and an AI feature no longer has daily_at.
  • In Settings, Categories and Tags are now under Notes, and Companies and Fact labels under People. Tasks is now under Calendar.

Fixed

  • Calendar guests now link to the person with their email address, including guests from iCloud calendars and calendars that give the address only as the guest's name. Your calendars catch up at their next refresh.
  • When you add or edit a task, choosing Delegate or the task's home a second time closes its menu.
  • The spinner turns while Nifty checks for updates, connects Nifty Remote or waits for a device to pair.
  • When a page is slow to open and you start typing, for example in Find settings, Nifty no longer moves you away and loses the rest of what you type. Focus stays where you put it. If you search Settings from one of its pages, going back once returns you to that page, however quickly you type.
  • Pressing Esc on a task you've changed no longer makes it vanish for a moment. The task stays open and, on a computer, says "Save ⌘↵ or Cancel", as every form with something typed in it now does.
  • A PDF you drop on a note while you're editing it is listed once, under Documents in the note's details, not under the text as well. On a new note, it shows there as soon as it's uploaded.
  • nifty backup now tells you when it can't read the service's settings, and which data directory it's using instead.
  • In the desktop app, a backup made just as Nifty restarts to restore an older one no longer deletes the backup being restored. If Nifty is making a backup when you choose Restore and restart, it asks you to wait until it has finished.
  • nifty recovery-url and nifty licence add no longer update the database while the server is running. If the database needs updating first, they ask you to restart the server.
  • The desktop app now always keeps the backup folder out of the data folder, and refuses a new data folder that would contain the backup folder.
  • Error reports now leave out the codes that name your stored files. In the desktop app, a crash of Nifty's server is reported once, not twice. A crash waiting to be sent is no longer lost if the server's error-reporting setting couldn't be read.
  • If Nifty can't load your data when the app first opens, it now says so and offers Try again, instead of showing a blank page and asking the server over and over.
  • In a narrower window, the Library shows how many documents each folder holds, and names in Unsorted have room instead of being cut to a letter or two. On a wider phone, the cards under Recently added keep a sensible size.
  • On a phone, when the line above a note's title wraps, no line starts or ends with a stray dot.
  • What you type straight after opening search, while it's still loading, now goes into search instead of setting off the page's shortcuts.
  • Quick sort says when your folders are loading, or when they couldn't load, with Try again, instead of showing only "No folder".
  • When Nifty is read-only, a refused upload now offers to add a licence, as other changes do. After an upload, Nifty also offers to reload when the server has been updated.
  • After you move a document out of Unsorted in the viewer and press Esc straight away, Nifty always takes you back to Unsorted.
  • When you close the welcome while the page under it is still loading, Nifty moves the keyboard focus to the page once it appears.
  • After you add models in Settings › AI, the new models show at once and the keyboard's focus goes to the first one, even when the server is slow to answer.
  • After you add a list, the keyboard's focus goes to its New task button (its heading on a phone), rather than getting lost as its page opens.
  • Signing out always lands on the sign-in page saying you've signed out, even while the page you left was still loading.
  • Links in a note's PDF no longer have a thin black box round them in some PDF apps.
  • When a note's or document's tasks can't load, its Tasks section says so with Try again, instead of asking the server again and again without showing anything.
  • Moving the pointer over a partly hidden option in a list, such as the event types or the Move to… menu, highlights it without scrolling the list or the page. The arrow keys still bring the highlighted option into view.
  • When a task or another window is open, the page behind it stays still and no longer shifts sideways.
  • In the desktop app, the time in a time field now sits in the middle of the field, as it does in a browser.
