Categories and pins
File each note under one category, and pin the notes you keep coming back to.
A category says what a note is about, such as Work or Family. Each note has one category, and each category has its own colour. A pin keeps a note handy, in the menu that opens when you hover over Notes in the toolbar and under Pinned.
When you set up Nifty, it starts with two categories, Personal and Work. You can rename, reorder or delete them, or add your own, in Settings → Categories. A note's type, such as Meeting or Idea, says what kind of note it is.
Give a note a category
- In the editor, choose Add category above the title, or choose the category that's already there.
- Type to find a category, and then press ↵. No category removes it.
To make a new category, type its name and choose Create “…”. It gets a colour of its own. You can change the colour, or add an icon, in Settings → Categories.

When the category is focused, press ↓ or a letter to open the list straight away.
Browse by category
Under Find notes, choose a category to see only its notes. All shows everything again. You can also choose the category above a note's title to do the same.
Manage categories
Open Settings → Categories.
- New category (N) adds a category with a name, a colour and, if you like, an icon.
- The pencil edits a category, and the bin deletes it. Its notes are kept without a category. This can't be undone.
- To change the order, drag a category, or press ⌥↑ or ⌥↓ on it. Categories appear in Notes in this order.
Pin a note
In a note, choose ⋯ → Pin note beside Edit note, or press P. Press P again to unpin it. You can also choose File → Pin note, which becomes Unpin note when the note is pinned.
Pinned notes appear in these places.
- Every list shows a pin beside them.
- They're all under Pinned above the notes list.
- They're listed when you hover over Notes in the toolbar. The menu shows the latest ten, and then All pinned notes.
