Mentions and tags

Type @ to link a person, # to add a tag or ^ to link a project.

On this page

In a note, type @, # or ^ after a space or at the start of a line. A menu opens. Keep typing to narrow it, and then press ↵.

The People menu after typing @ma
Type Links Where it shows up
@ A person The person's Notes tab
# A tag Notes, showing every note with the tag
^ A project The project's Notes tab

In the text, people are blue, projects are green and tags are grey. Each one also starts with its symbol, so you can tell them apart without the colours.

When you read a note, right-click a person to open a menu with Open, Facts, Tasks and Documents, which go to those parts of their page, and Add task…, which starts a task delegated to them. Your own menu has no Tasks or Add task…. Right-click a project for Open, Notes, Tasks, Documents and Add task…, which starts a task in it. The same menus open wherever Nifty links to a person or a project, such as a note's details, People and a meeting's guests.

Mention a person

  1. Type @ and the start of any part of their name. For example, @ma finds Maya Okafor and Zoe Martin.
  2. Press ↵ or Tab, or choose the person.

The mention links to the person, and the note appears on their Notes tab. If you rename someone, every mention changes too. See People.

To shorten a mention, press Backspace just after it. Each press removes the last word, so @Maya Okafor becomes @Maya. When one word is left, the next press deletes the mention. Rest the pointer on a shortened mention to see the person's full name.

Mention someone by an alias

If you've given someone an alias, such as Mum, type @mum to find them. The menu shows the alias with their name beside it. The mention shows the alias, and pointing at it shows their name. If you later remove the alias, the mention shows their name instead.

Mention someone new

  1. Type @ and their full name, such as @Katherine Johnson.
  2. Choose New person “Katherine Johnson” at the end of the menu.

Nifty adds them to People and links the mention to them. You can add their details on their page later. If Nifty can't add them, your text stays as you typed it and a message explains why.

Tag a note

  1. Type # and a tag, such as #recipes.
  2. Press ↵ to choose a tag you've used before, or choose Create tag “recipes” to start a new one.

Tags can't have spaces, so use a hyphen, such as #work-trip. Capital letters don't matter, so #Recipes and #recipes are the same tag.

Choose a tag in a note to see every note that has it. A note's tags are also listed in its details.

Tip:

Typing # and a space at the start of a line still makes a heading.

  1. Type ^ and the start of the project's name.
  2. Press ↵.

Active projects come first. The project appears in the note's details, and the note appears on the project's Notes tab. See Projects.

Rename, merge or delete tags

Open Settings → Tags. Each tag's row has buttons to rename, merge and delete it.

  • Rename (the pencil) renames the tag in every note.
  • Merge moves its notes onto another tag with Merge tags, and then deletes it.
  • Delete (the bin) removes the tag. Its notes keep the word as plain text.

Merging and deleting can't be undone.
