Your licence
Try Nifty free for 14 days, and then add a licence key to keep making changes.
On this page
Nifty is free for 14 days from the first time you open it. After that, it's read-only until you add a licence. You can still open, search and download everything. A licence keeps working for good, and it gets you every version released until its Updates until date.
The free trial
The first time you open Nifty, its welcome asks how you'd like to start (Setting up Nifty). Choose Start a free trial, or choose I have a licence key to paste one. Either way, the trial runs from that first launch.
Nifty → Licence… shows how long is left. In the last 3 days, a banner says when the trial ends. Its × button hides the banner until the next day.

Buy a licence opens thenifty.app/buy. Your key arrives by email.
Add your licence
- Choose Nifty → Licence….
- Paste the key from your email into Licence key.
- Choose Add licence, or press ⌘↵.
It doesn't matter if your email split the key across lines. If Nifty can't accept a key, it says why and keeps what you pasted.
The banner's Add licence… button and the Licence… link in Nifty → About Nifty open the same window. So does
searching for licence with ⌘K.
See your licence
Nifty → Licence… shows who Nifty is licensed to, the email address, Updates until and the key's ID. For a key you bought, it also shows the Order. If you email support, quote the ID or the order.

Renew or replace your key
- Choose Nifty → Licence…, and then choose Replace key….
- Paste the new key.
- Choose Replace key.
To renew, buy a renewal at thenifty.app/buy and replace your key with the new one.
When Nifty is read-only
When the trial ends and you have no licence that covers your version, a banner says so at the top of every page. A newer version also refuses a revoked key.

- What still works: You can open, search and download everything. You can sign in, and change your password, authenticators, API tokens, appearance, sounds and updates.
- What's paused: You can't add or change things. New note and the other create buttons are greyed out, and their keys say why.
- A note you're typing when the trial ends stays in the editor, with Nifty couldn’t save your changes because it’s read-only. It saves when you add a licence and type again.
When you add a licence, everything works again straight away. Nothing is deleted.
If you subscribe to Nifty Plus, its features don't work while Nifty is read-only, but the subscription is still charged. Nifty Plus is separate from your licence and doesn't change its Updates until date.
When your updates end
Nifty keeps working after the Updates until date. Newer versions still appear in Nifty → About Nifty, with Renew your licence, but they aren't installed. To get them, renew your licence, replace your key and then update.
If your key is revoked
A key is revoked if its order is refunded or a payment dispute is lost. A revoked key keeps working on the version you have, but versions
released after it was revoked refuse it. If you update to one of them, Nifty → Licence… says the key has been
revoked. Nifty then works as if it had no licence, so it's read-only once the free trial has ended, until you add a
valid key. If you think that's a mistake, email [email protected] with your key's ID or order.
On a server
On a server, you add a licence from the command line, without a browser. On a Linux server installed with
install.sh, run this command:
sudo -u nifty /usr/local/bin/nifty licence add --data /var/lib/nifty
Paste the key, and then press CtrlD. The command runs beside the server, so you don't need to
restart it. If you've updated Nifty but haven't restarted the server, the command asks you to restart it first. To see
the licence and its key ID, run nifty licence with the same --data.
