Use with Claude

Let Claude Desktop or Claude Code look things up in your Nifty data.

On this page

Claude Desktop and Claude Code can read your Nifty data and answer questions from it, such as "Who is Maya, and what's open with her?" You connect them with a read-only API token, so they can't change anything.

Make a token

  1. Open Settings → API tokens and choose New token (N).
  2. Name it after the app, such as Claude Desktop, and choose Read only under Access. Leave Expires on Never, or choose a date.
  3. Choose Add token, and then choose Copy token. You can see the token only once.

Use the token in place of nw_… below.

Claude Desktop

  1. In Claude Desktop, open Settings → Developer → Edit Config. It shows claude_desktop_config.json.

  2. Open that file and add Nifty to it. If Nifty's Mac app is on this Mac, add the following.

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "nifty": {
          "command": "/Applications/Nifty.app/Contents/MacOS/nifty",
          "args": ["mcp"],
          "env": { "NIFTY_TOKEN": "nw_…" }
        }
      }
    }

    If the file already has "mcpServers", add only the "nifty" part inside it.

  3. Quit and reopen Claude Desktop.

On Windows, the command is C:\\Users\\<you>\\AppData\\Local\\Programs\\Nifty\\nifty.exe. Each \ is doubled, as JSON requires.

Claude Code

If Nifty's Mac app is on this Mac, run this command in a terminal.

claude mcp add --scope user nifty -e NIFTY_TOKEN=nw_… -- /Applications/Nifty.app/Contents/MacOS/nifty mcp

On Windows, use "C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Programs\Nifty\nifty.exe" mcp at the end instead.

Claude Code can then use Nifty in all your projects. For a server on this computer with its own data folder, add NIFTY_DATA as nifty mcp explains.

Keep Nifty running

Claude reads from Nifty while it's running, so keep the app open, or keep your server running. Otherwise, Claude says "Nifty isn't running". If that happens, open Nifty and ask again. On the computer that runs Nifty, Claude finds it even when its port changes, so you only need to set it up once.

What Claude can read

Claude can read everything, but it can't change anything.

  • Search finds people, notes, projects, tasks, calendar events from the week either side of today, documents, task lists and folders.
  • Today gives your day at a glance, as on Today.
  • People gives everyone you know, or one person in full, with their key dates, work, facts and connections.
  • A person's meetings gives their past and upcoming meetings.
  • Notes gives a note's text and what it's filed under, or a list of notes by person, project, tag or category.
  • Projects gives one project with its members, or a list of projects by status or member.
  • Tasks gives open, completed or archived tasks, by deadline, by a person they mention, or by a project they're filed under or mention.
  • Calendar events gives the events between two dates, up to 31 days apart.
  • Documents gives a document's name, folder and links. Once it's been summarised, it also gives the summary and the details found in it. It can also find documents whose text or summary contains some words. Claude can't read the file itself.

Claude can't add, change or delete anything, because the token it uses is read-only.

Note:

Some of your data was written by other people, such as calendar invitations, and Claude reads it too. Be careful about letting Claude act on instructions it finds there, especially when other tools are connected to Claude.

Stop Claude reading

In Settings → API tokens, choose the bin beside the token you made, and then choose Revoke token. Claude loses access immediately. To use Claude with Nifty again, make another token.

Use a server on another machine

To reach your server from a Mac that isn't running it, the server's address must start with https://, as a Tailscale address does. Use your server's address in place of https://nifty.example.ts.net.

  • Claude Desktop: Install the Mac app, which doesn't need to be open, and add the address to "env": { "NIFTY_URL": "https://nifty.example.ts.net", "NIFTY_TOKEN": "nw_…" }.

  • Claude Code: Connect to the server directly with this command.

    claude mcp add --scope user --transport http nifty https://nifty.example.ts.net/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer nw_…"

If Claude can't reach Nifty

  • "Nifty isn't running": Open Nifty, or start your server, and ask Claude again. You don't need to restart Claude.
  • "The token was refused": The token was revoked or mistyped. Make another token and paste it in again.

To build your own connection, see API tokens and the MCP endpoint.
