Signing in and recovery
Sign in, with a code if you've turned on two-factor, stay signed in and get back in if you're locked out.
On this page
Nifty has one username and password, and they're yours. When the Mac app keeps your data on your Mac, it signs you in by itself. This page is for a Nifty server, used in a browser or the Mac app.
- Open your Nifty's address.
- Type your Username and Password.
- Tick Remember this device to stay signed in for 30 days. Leave it off on a shared computer.
- Choose Sign in.
If you don't tick Remember this device, you're signed out when you close the browser or after 12 hours away.
Sign in with a code
When two-factor authentication is on, Nifty then asks for a code.
- Open your authenticator app and find the 6-digit code for Nifty.
- Type it in Code.
- Choose Sign in.
Remember this device also skips the code on this browser for 30 days. After that, or after you change your password on another device, Nifty asks for a code again. API tokens never need a code.
If the code doesn't work, type the newest one. After too many wrong codes, or after more than 10 minutes, you go back to the start to sign in again.
Sign out
Choose Nifty → Sign out. A remembered browser still skips the code the next time you sign in.
When the Mac app keeps your data on your Mac, it has no sign-in page or Sign out. It signs you in each time it opens.
Change your username or password
Open Settings → Username or Settings → Password. Both changes ask for your current password. Changing the password signs out your other devices. See Settings.
Forgot your password?
You need a terminal on the computer that Nifty runs on. Run this command there:
nifty recovery-url
It prints a link. Open the link within 15 minutes, type a new password twice and choose Set password and sign in.
- The link works once. Making a new link cancels the old one.
- Using the link signs you out everywhere else. API tokens keep working.
Recovery has the details for a server, such as how to run the command as the server's user.
Lost your authenticator?
If you've lost your phone or deleted Nifty from your authenticator app, sign in with another authenticator if you added one. Otherwise, make a recovery link as described in Forgot your password?.
Using the link sets a new password and turns off two-factor authentication. Every authenticator is removed, and no browser skips the code any more. Sign in, and then add your authenticator again in Settings → Two-factor authentication.
Too many attempts
After several wrong passwords in a row, Nifty says Too many failed sign-ins and waits 15 minutes. Wrong codes
work the same way, with Too many wrong codes. You can wait, or set a new password with nifty recovery-url.
