Install on Windows

Download Nifty for Windows, set it up and keep it up to date.

On this page

Nifty for Windows keeps your data on your PC, or it can open a Nifty server. It needs Windows 11 on x64. Windows on Arm runs it too, using emulation.

Install

  1. Download Nifty for Windows, and then open the installer.
  2. When Windows says Windows protected your PC, choose More info and then Run anyway.
  3. When it's done, open Nifty from the Start menu.

You don't need to be an administrator, because Nifty installs for you alone.

Note:

Windows asks in step 2 because Nifty isn't code-signed yet. It asks only once, and updates don't ask.

First run

  1. Choose Get started.
  2. Choose Keep my data on this PC.
  3. Nifty gets ready and opens. Follow its welcome: check your name, choose your details, colours and backups, and start the free trial or add your licence key (Setting up Nifty).

You don't need a password. Nifty signs you in by itself each time it opens.

The first run also asks whether to Send error reports when something goes wrong. This is off unless you tick it. See Error reports and privacy.

  • To keep your data somewhere else, choose Advanced options in step 2 and choose a folder. Choose one that other accounts on the PC can't open.
  • To use a Nifty server instead, choose Use Nifty on a server, type its address and choose Connect (Signing in).

Updates

Nifty checks for a new version once a day, downloads it in the background and installs it when you exit. A progress bar appears for a moment while it installs.

  • To install it now, choose Restart to update in Nifty → Desktop settings… → Updates. Nifty reopens on the page you were on.
  • To check for an update yourself, choose Nifty → Check for updates….
  • Desktop settings… → Updates also has Check for updates automatically and Beta releases, as on the Mac (Install on a Mac).

Change where your data lives

Choose Nifty → Desktop settings…, and then Data. You can switch between this PC and a server, or choose another folder.

Where things are

What Where
Your data (by default) %LOCALAPPDATA%\Nifty
Nifty itself %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Nifty
The app's own settings %LOCALAPPDATA%\io.niftyware.desktop
Backups %LOCALAPPDATA%\Nifty Backups (Backups)

Uninstall

Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, choose … beside Nifty and then choose Uninstall. Your data stays in its folder until you delete it.
